Top tips for Dania Beach Motorcycle Show

Woman riding rocket powered motorcycle.
It's not rocket science, but you'll appreciate these tips.

The fantastic, FREE 2023 Dania Beach Vintage Motorcycle Show is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Frost Park, 300 NE Second St., Dania Beach, Florida.

More than 250 motorcycles at least 35 years old are expected to be on display at this well organized show featuring food, music, motorcycle field games and typically glorious South Florida winter weather. The park is only a few blocks south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Best of all, admission is free.

I asked show coordinator Clare Frost for her tips on having fun at this 16th Annual Dania Beach Vintage Motorcycle Show. Here are her suggestions:

1. Ride your motorcycle. Parking is free for motorcycles. Cars pay $10 to park at the neighboring Casino at Dania Beach. St. Maurice at Resurrection Catholic Church offers parking for $5 donation at the church, 441, NE Second St., Dania Beach. And there is some parking on the street with no charge.

2. Most turn into the parking from Dania Beach Boulevard, east of Federal Highway (U.S. 1) in Dania Beach. But you can come in the "back way" by turning east off Federal north of Dania Beach Boulevard onto NE First Street or Second Street.

3. The swap meet was huge last year, with a bit of everything, not just motorcycle stuff. (I spent a bunch of money.) About one third of vendors are new to the show.

4. Don’t miss the antique and custom bicycles in the park in front of the motorcycles. There is a wood bike built in the 1890s.

5. The motorcycle field games had 15 bikes participating last year, with the audience eight people deep.

6. New this year: Homestead Speedway is bringing a NASCAR car.

7. We don't have preregistration of bikes anymore so we don't know what will show up, but I get to pick my favorite as we have a "Clare's Favorite" award. (Fan of Steve McQueen, so anything he rode would be my pick.)

Motorcycles must be 1988 or older to be entered and judged. Fifty trophies and one Best of Show will be awarded. There is a $10 cash fee to enter your motorcycle in the show.

Thank you for the tips, Clare and thank you for so many years of bringing great vintage motorcycles to light in a free show in the (usually) glorious weather.

My Royal Enfield Bullet and I have been going to the Dania Beach Vintage Motorcycle Show since 2009.  Here are some additional tips, from me:

First, don't miss the display of bicycles. It's not just for kids. Nothing will bring back better memories of your own first days on two wheels.

Second, get there early, especially if you want to photograph your favorite motorcycles. You'll see and hear some great bikes enter the unfenced public park under their own power. Registration to enter bikes begins at 7 a.m. and closes at 10:30 a.m.

Third, Talk to owners. Every motorcycle has a story to tell, and so does its owner/rider/builder/restorer. Knowing the back story will enhance your experience.

Fourth, Prepare for sun! This is Florida. Hats, sunglasses, shirts with sleeves and sunscreen are essential.
