The Oxford (UK) Mail reports that an organization of animal lovers is buying up hens at the end of their best laying days from commercial farms and adopting them out to save them from slaughter. The hens still reward their saviors with eggs, although not as many as they laid earlier in life.
To which an on-line reader replied:
